The camera I'm planning to take on the trail next year is a Nikon N65 SLR.
I thought long and hard about what camera to take before buying this one,
and the purpose of my question is not to re-open the debate on
digital/disposable/SLR/point-and-shoot etc. What I'd really like some
advice on is the best way to carry it. It weighs 13 ounces which is light
for an SLR, but it is a bit bulky. I'd like it to be readily accessible,
but protected as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Camera is the one place that weight has increased over my treks . For our
Autumn Adventure this fall, I took my ancient Pentax SLR and two lenses.
Very bulky. I purchased a new bag (needed one anyway, as the original bag
was falling to pieces) with both a shoulder strap and a waist strap. Used
the waist strap when I had my pack on, and usually with a day pack while
on sidehikes but not always. Kept the camera convenient, which is
essential if you shoot a lot (roll and half to two rolls a day, in my
case). If you have to dig it out of your pack, you will not be able to
just stop and shoot while on the trail. Prefer and used the shoulder
strap in camp, while touring, etc.
