Fanny packs -- I used one, too, this past summer at Philmont to carry not
only my camera (it was admittedly smaller than the Nikon referenced below),
but also a 16 oz water bottle (I didn't use a camelback), as well as
leftover snacks to eat along the way...I heartily recommend the idea of a
fanny pack (I also use it when hiking in winter to carry gloves / hats /
etc), BUT, be sure to try this at home first, cause the the fanny pack
itself may interfere with (get in the way of) your backpack's hipbelt. I
had to try several models of fanny packs before finding one that was
compatible with my backpack's hipbelt.
Another advantage of using a fanny pack is you now have a small 'daypack'
to carry stuff in on side hikes and at program time.

Simple: a fanny pack!

The camera I'm planning to take on the trail next year is a Nikon N65 SLR.
I thought long and hard about what camera to take before buying this one,
and the purpose of my question is not to re-open the debate on
digital/disposable/SLR/point-and-shoot etc. What I'd really like some
advice on is the best way to carry it. It weighs 13 ounces which is light
for an SLR, but it is a bit bulky. I'd like it to be readily accessible,
but protected as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
