I carried a Pentax IQZoom 105-WR this year, strapping the carrying case to
my left pack strap at sternum strap level, for quick access. Worked
great--no fishing around in anything or having someone try to pull it out of
an external pocket on my backpack. It's the waterproof (or
weatherproof--never quite figured out the difference other than it's not to
be used underwater) model. The camera got wet when it rained but it kept
the water out. I don't know how big your Nikon is so don't know if that's
feasible for you. Also, consider how to pack it to keep it dry unless it's
water/weatherproof--otherwise it'll get wet in a thunder/hail storm
somewhere along the trail.
