Bringing less stuff is the ticket. It's also a lot cheaper than titanium or
hi-tec items. Stick to the Guidebook to Adventure list or the Philmont
Advisor Guide List. Less stuff means less total weight and less total
volume. Less weight let's you move faster and easier with less chance of
injury. It lets you enjoy the view much more. Less stuff gets you out of
camp, on the trail, and into program faster.

One of the best weight and volume savings I made prior to the trek was to
replace my GoreTex rainsuit with FrogToggs.

GoreTex Suit 29 ounces $200
FrogToggs 17 ounces $60

I also had a pair of gaiters at 6 ounces which I left at home to save
weight.

I used my rain jacket to regulate my temperature around camp and on the
trail. The temperatures on our early June trek allowed me to wear a light
fleece shirt and my FrogTogg top on cooler mornings and after sundown. I
only wore my fleece jacket once, but I would still carry it along. Some of
our youth needed both rain suit and fleece to stay warm at times. Four of
twelve in our crew used the Toggs and were pleased with their performance.
