I've carried my Olympus OM-10 (an older SLR) in a large
fanny pack worn in front instead of the rear. The fanny
pack also makes a good place to store other things you
want ready access to on the trail.

I put the camera in a zip lock bag before placing it in
the fanny pack to protect it from rain and dust.
