I picked up a couple of the fanny packs that have a pass-through sleeve on them from Alps Mounaineering. I took a smaller digital camera, and it fit in the padded version quite nicely. Your camera may or may not fit.
I'd recommend looking for something that you can attach to the waist belt or shoulder strap -- the above fits on a waist belt. The belt to the fanny pack was not removable, but fit inside the sleeve. This gave me the option of using it by itself, though I never did. It was a bit of a nuisance at times having the extra lump on the belt of the pack, especially when it came to using a pack cover, but I learned to work with it. Two things you need to do for the camera -- padding, and keeping it dry. The pack I used was padded. It wasn't water proof, but was pretty resistant. I kept the camera in the "padded" bag it came in to guarantee that it stayed dry (since then I've bought a waterproof cover, but I didn't have it at Philmont).
