Re: [Philmont]: Camera -- best way to carry

i purchased a pentax zx-5n slr with a tamron 28-200 zoom especially for my trek in 2000. it is much lighter and less expensive to replace than my leica. i took 25 rolls of 36 exposure, and ended up shooting 19 rolls. i also carried it on the leave no trace course at ptc that september. i will carry it again on my next trek, despite the temptation of a much lighter and smaller digital camera.

i left the case (the entire thing, not just the cover) that came with the camera at home . i purchased a tamrac slr bag or pouch (not a rectangular bag but one shaped generally like a camera) just deep enough for the camera and lens. i left the shoulder strap that came with this bag at home, also. the back of this bag has 4 aluminum rings in a trapezoidal arrangement. i took 2 lengths of hollow web strapping used in rock climbing and sewed these in an "X" formation to the rings, making sure to leave just enough slack to slip over my pack's hip belt (an i-frame gregory). i did not attach it permanently to the hip belt which means i remove and replace the camera bag each time i remove and reshoulder my pack. removal and replacement takes a moment (and is awkward at first), but i can move the bag to either side for variation and comfort, or move it just enough to adjust the side and buckle tabs in snugging up the belt. and, i remove the bag from the belt when a pack line is called. the bag is slightly padded, waterproof and has a front pouch for carrying a few rolls of film (or chapstick) for easy access.

i did put my film in the "wait-a-minute" bag, but never my camera which i kept between my boots at night. i remain skeptical that a camera will be the most attractive smell left on the ground, even with the most scrupulous attention to getting the food and smellables into the bear bag.
