Having and 18 year old "youth" in the crew is one of the best ways to back
up your 2 deep leadership. If you loose one of the older adults on the
trail he is a good backup for two deep. Also, they tend to be very strong
and can carry the 2 1/2 gallon colapsable to the dry camp!

  Subject: [Philmont]: 18 year olds

  Hi,

I am new to the group and have already learned so much from the posts.
Just by way of introduction, since you all seem to know each other already,
I am the mother of a 14-yr. old Life Scout in Troop 757 in Howard County.
MD, about 30 minutes west of Baltimore. The last time our troop went to
Philmont was in 1996. Fortunately one of the dads who went then is going
again with his younger son. Our newest Eagle Scout went to Philmont last
summer as part of an OA Trail crew. So they are our experts. We will go to
Philmont next summer July 26 August 7 with two crews.

I have a question about tenting arrangements for our Eagle Scout who just
turned 18. The Philmont literature says that people ages 18 to 21 can either
go as adults or youth, so we put him in our youth count. But the Baltimore
Area Council says he now needs to tent with adults and not scouts. What is
the tenting policy at Philmont? We can work it either way, just need to
know.
