RE: [Philmont]: hiking poles on 'net

Hi Lorie;

Someone else mentioned Sierra Designs, and that's probably a good place to
look. I ended up with a pair that another leader bought for $25.00 from
them when he decided to upgrade. Unfortunately, they are somewhere halfway
up the Tooth of Time where I left them as I climbed the last 150 feet hand
over hand at about 4:45 a.m. one morning. Couldn't find them on the way
down, however, they worked great for the 10 1/2 days that I had them.

I don't know how good the anti shock works - my son had a pair, and he
just kind of joked about turning the anti shock off and on. I used them
for half a day and couldn't tell any real difference. I think his pair was
about $60, again from SD.

The only recommendation I have is to try and get something other than a
hard plastic handle. Several of the ones in our crew had cork handles or
some other sort of sweat absorbing handle. Those of us with the had
plastic ended up using tennis tape over the handle. This worked, but
wasn't ideal because of the curvature of the handle.

By the way, one of your sigs "A little song, a little dance, a little
seltzer down your pants." is driving me crazy. Is this from an old Dick
van Dyke show?

Thanks
Bill
