Just my two cents. I have used, and will use, a bamboo walking stick. It is
plenty light, a little longer than most trekking poles, and affords me the
"third contact point" I need at Philmont. We also use it to haul water by
stringing the bottles along it so they can all be tended to a once. I'm old
too ;+) and it works fine. As others have said, their is no "correct" way to
do Philmont, but you should be able to figure out some things not to do by
reading (skimming) this list.
