Yes, list friends, I do know that John is saying this in jest. When he
first asked me, off list, for my thoughts on socks, my post back to him
was much more lengthy and in detail than my normal mode of trying not be
too long with list posts. And in the course of that sock dissertation,
after describing the various brands & combinations that I've had on my
feet I said "I just love my smart wool socks." John, being the man that
he is, lumped that comment into the category of being just a flippant
"female" phrase and took it lightly. But after he did his own sock
experimentations (scientific of course because how else would John
LeBlanc do it???), he has confessed to me that he "just loves" his smart
wool socks.
Of course not everything that is the greatest for one person is the
greatest for another. And even in the face of science proving something
is the best, I sometimes prefer other equipment or methods of doing
something to what he has proven to be the scientific "best". Stoves are
one point that come to mind, but this is one of the wonderful things
about a list like this & your own shake-downs and experimentations. You
find what works for you and your crew, and balance the opinions (and
science) of others against your own personal prejudices of what is best
& needed for the trail.
