Anybody remember Frostline kits?
My wife made a Frostline down vest for me more than 20 years ago and I still have it in good condition. Unfortunately she must have made the kind that shrinks as it doesn't seem to fit too well any more. I carried it at least 4 times on treks.
To John and the rest of us old coots - You like your down bags but what did you carry in '59. I carried a rectangular cloth bag with some kind of fiber batting for fill. It was made by Herter's in Minnesota and weighed about 8 lbs. We, (at least I) didn't know of anything better. It got wet my first night at Philmont. In '67, we used large square canvas tarps for tents. The first night's camp was on a gentle slope at Four Mile Gate (no longer a camp). When you put your 8 lb. sleeping bag on top of your rubberized cloth poncho that you used for your ground cloth, you sometimes ended up sliding out of your tent as I did. That heavy morning dew makes your 8 lb bag into a 12 lb bag real quick. ;)
My current bag is a 20º Moonstone Optima with Lite Loft fill. It has kept me warm down to 10º. It weighs less than 3 lbs and fits in its original stuff sack with my inflatable foam pillow and a Thermarest Ultralight 3/4. My entire sleeping system weighs in at about 5 lbs. I have used this combo for my last 3 treks. No John, I haven't got it wet.
