I find it interesting how we take a position and hold. That is the beauty of
this list, that we can have different views and the reader makes up his/her
mind as to the validity of the statements. I don't speak often, but I have 5
treks since 1991 (every 2 years with great luck!!). I bought a Camelback as
a present to myself before 2001. I took it along and used it. It was NOT as
good as a water bottle. Harder to judge how much intake I had. Harder to
consume. Easier? Yes, quite. Better? No doubt, no. I will start my 6th
trek, Lord willing and the creek don't rise, in 2003, (I like commas) and my
Camelback will stay home. My advise is...Save the money and the weight for
another item. We require 3, 1.5 qt. canteens. Used to require 2, but the
idea to carry an empty was a winner for us 2 treks ago (with 2 dry camps) and
we have adopted it as policy. One is carried empty in the pack unless we are
going to a dry camp. Low weight (yes, I know every once counts) and very
high yield. Yes, we carry bladders. Also empty until we need them.
On another topic, I carried an entire tent myself for 2 treks because I was
tenting alone and didn't mind. Crew gear? I think not.
A semi-wise old man said to me once, "Get all the advise you can get....and
do what you think is right."
5 and counting...
