<snip from Jim Moss message> If you think you can just carabineer your
nalgene to your pack and grab it, I'll show you my collection of nalgene
bottles with the little plastic section broken on the lid that I have
collected over the years. (You need to ad carabineer weight to the nalgene
weight also.) <end of snip>
On our trek in June of 2002 I kept seeing little blue plastic disks on the
trail. I kept wondering what they could be and finally noticed that they
were formerly part of a Nalgene bottle top. I must have picked up a dozen
before I figured this out. I used all nalgenes on the trek last summer, but
I am now planning to get a large camelback. I would now welcome the
convenience of drinking while walking and not having to go for a bottle each
time I need a drink. I did not always get water as soon as I needed it. I
will still probably carry at least one nalgene bottle and maybe something
like the 3qt nalgene canteen.
Our crew carried three 3qt nalgene canteens last summer and two of them
developed leaks. I was less than satisfied with the harder plastic. We
still used them to treat water, but not to carry water in or out of our
packs when we had a dry camp, which was our original plan.
Sawmill to Mt. Phillips on the 4th day on the trail with a side hike to
Cypher's Mine for water. What a day!
Most of the youth had a hydration bladder of some type. Bladders seemed to
work well for our youth. A great picture shows one of our crew at Thunder
Ridge, lying on his ground pad resting with his water bladder hung on a low
branch stub, and the water line in his mouth like an IV. Our crew leader
had a bladder and drank enough that he slowed us down at times looking for a
flat rock. We renamed him "C&C".
