Here is my opinion, FWIW. I like the Nalogene bottles. Years ago (like early
70's) when I was hiking the AT and areas of north GA, we used these squarish
white plastic water bottles that had a stopper type lid with a plastic
sleeve that screwed it down tight. Only problem was they leaked if you set
your pack down sideways! I got my first Nalogene wide mouth bottles in 1995
while taking a class for Houston Scouters bound for Philmont. The guy who
taught it, Dan Ownby, had done 11 summers in Philmont, either as a crew
member, Ranger, Rayado Ranger or advisor. I remember the reasons he
recommended we get 2 of them for our trek,

1. They were virtually indestructible.
2. They were relatively cheap, especially if we shopped at a place here
called the Container Store. ($2.50 ea. as I recall)
3. The wide mouth had some great benefits; easy to put drink mix in the one
you chose for that, attached to most purifiers, easy to drink out of.
4. You could easily gauge how much the crew was drinking.
5. If you premarked the bottle at the halfway point you had a handy way to
measure water for the cooked meals.

So that is what I bought and these are the soft white plastic ones without
the attached lid. I like them and in 8 years I have only owned 3! In 2002 I
was at REI and bought a collapsible version which is great for the dry camps
and being able to compress it when not in use. I would rather a kid spend
his money on boots and a good bag then the smaller items

As a side note, I like the MSR bags for camp water, etc. I have several
sizes up to the 10 Liter bag. They are just about indestructible. I usually
caution against taking those 2-gallon cubitaniers because the handle pulls
off and they seem to rupture easily.
