The term sailor is correct. It was originally used by
sailors to hold the jugs of rum on the walls of the
sailing ships. A little tricky to learn to tie but
works great, can hold any size jug (read bottle) and
only takes a short piece of rope.
My boys tied MANY of them while at Philmont last
summer on a Mountain Man Trek. One is returning this
summer and will have a supply of rope for this
purpose.
