RE: [Philmont]: TREKS 2002 Distance / Elevation Charts

I'll let you in on the little bit that I know about errors. During 2001
Philmont began remapping the entire ranch using GIS (Geographical
Information Systems). Philmont has 2 Trimble GeoExplorer 3's that they used
to gather datapoints for the new maps. I was blessed with the oportunity to
get to use them some during the Fall of 2001 and Winter of 2002. Really cool
instruments.

Anyway, by the time the Spring had rolled around, all of Philmont's North
Country had been mapped and Philmont also had a new North Country Secional
made. These maps should be really accurate. I did some of the proofing and
was pretty satisfied with how the map read. The data collected also will be
used to get a more accurate distance between camps for the Peaks books.
Unfortunately, the Ponil Complex fire may have made some of the data
obsolete as trails and campsites burned. I'm sure that the 2003 treks will
be different in the North Country because of the fire recovery.

During the Summer of 2002 a great deal (if not all) of the South and Central
country got mapped with the GPS units. I'm sure that Bill has finished
working with the data on these by now. This too should make the distances
between camps more acurate for the Peaks books.

I got to see some comparison of the data on trails I collected laid down on
the old maps and you could tell a diffference. Overall it was amazing how
acurate the old maps were since most of them were drawn from people's memory
of how the trail goes.

So to wrap up, the distances that the Peaks books have "should" be really
accurate now.
