I have a gallon size Coleman fuel can that has been severely ventilated in a
bears maw. There are five holes in it 3/8 of an inch in diameter and from
both sides of the can.

It was part of a stash of fuel and a Coleman suitcase model 425 stove left
over winter in the West Elk Wilderness of Colorado by a outfitter friend.
Yes, you aren't supposed to leave anything there over winter, but it was.

The next summer when we visited that camp a quick check of the stash which
was placed behind a rock across the creek instead of hung from a bag for
obvious reasons (they did not want anyone to find it) indicated a bear had
tried to get into the stove without success and grabbed the can and gave it a
snug bite. I'm sure that the Coleman fuel spurting into the bears mouth was
rather unrewardable as there was still some fuel in the can even with all the
extra ventilation.

We don't consider fuel cans smelables to go into the bear bag at Philmont but
they do go in the fire pit along with the stoves. As most of us recognize,
stoves and most fire pits at Philmont do have food remnants and are
considered smelables for good reason.
