With all due respect Tom, I disagree.
And I'm the guy who admonishes those hiking the tooth trail at night to see
the sunrise.
Rayado treks are a completely different ball of wax.
The participants are an older, more mature group and are specifically trained
to handle much more trying circumstances than a regular crew is. Most have
already done a regular trek.
If memory serves me correct, I think the minimum age is 16. Anyway, I talked
to a 15 year old daughter of a PhilMont administrator last summer. She told
me she doesn't want to do a Rayado until at least 17 because she says she
will get a lot more out of it then when she is more mature. And if you knew
this person, you would say she is ready now at 15. And I agree with her.
They are under the constant watchful eye of several Rayado Ragers who are
specially trained and picked for that job.
Regular crews are only under the watchful eye of the idiot who suggested they
night hike to see the sunrise in the first place.
It's a similar thing to saying all army troops are the same. I think anyone
should be able to see the difference between mess hall cooks and special
forces.
Nope, I do not subscribe to the "same for all" rules at all. What is unsafe
for one is not necessarily unsafe for all.
