The boys in our crew talked about seeing something at sunrise. Being a
resourceful advisor I forgot to wake them up... Being adolescents they would
sleep half the day if you let them.

This is a touchy subject. Philmont is full of double standards, but I will
try to give some reasoning for this one.
Rayado is designed to be a COMPLETELY different experience than a 10 day
trek. In order to get these experiences across to the kids, they have to
have their own rules. I can not mention these as secrecy is dependent on
success of the Rayado experience. These kids spend more time with Rangers.
They have had more Philmont training than other crews. Philmont does not
want them to be hiking at night, but iteneraries sometimes work out that
way.
Mentioning that Rayado participants may be hiking in the dark can endanger
the Rayado experience so I would suggest not telling kids this before they
do Rayado.

4. Hiking in the dark..
Unless you are on a Rayado crew and you may well be hiking all night to
reach your goal.
Why the double standard?
