Happy Holidays to all,
I may be kicking over a hornets nest with this one: or the consensus may
be clear.
I believe that a few years ago , there was a thread;possibly on scouts-l;
about the relative merits of folding, rolling and bagging tents as opposed
to "stuffing". Yes, stuffing the tent into it's bag just as we (I suppose
almost all) do with sleeping bags.
The rational behind using the "stuff method" is that when the tent is folded
in the fold and roll, the tent is always folded on the same fold line and
the fibers will become weak along that line and are more prone to failure.
I'm sure that almost all of us are familiar with the collection of road maps
that we have in our glove compartments. Don't they always fall apart right
at the folds? When you stuff, folds and wrinkles are random for every time
you stuff. That way the folds and wrinkles occur differently every time you
put the tent away.
To get things started, I'll admit that I have become a "stuffer". I've used
this method for several years and have had no adverse affects. The time it
takes is a lot less than careful folding ,rolling and coaxing the finished
package into bag. As a matter of fact ,I have had to unroll and re-roll on
many occasions to get the roll small enough to get into the bag. With the
"stuff" you just keep stuffing until it's all in! The only "downside" is
that the tent, when it is first put up, presents a rather wrinkled
appearance. This goes away within a few hours and ,for me at least, doesn't
affect the tents performance.
Also, as an aside, I'd like to hear everyone's comments on seam sealing. I
purchased a Eureka Zeus 2EXO for Christmas, for my favorite tentmate (me).
I'm sure that everyone has a favorite material, method and/or technique for
seam sealing.
