My experience as a Scout, and later as a Marine, both using haversacks
(60s & 70s), is that rolling will take less space and everything will
hold up better.
My mother used to make my brother and I repack four or five times to be
sure we could get all the air out and everything in. The Northface I
now use (veteran of 5 treks) is so roomy I tend not to pack as
carefully.
Another thing I can testify to - ALWAYS pack everything in exactly the
same place. every time. When packing at night (we usually started
hiking before light, eating breakfast about an hour into the day - got
us to program and next campsite usually by noon), or if you need to find
something in a hurry, always being the same in the same place makes
everything mush easier to access and keep things compact and organized.
