One of the issues I bring up when doing Philmont training for adults is
to beware of the radical changes in diet that you will face on the
Ranch. Scouts with cast-iron stomachs seem to handle the changes
without too much difficulty, but many adults have problems - basically
because most of us don't exist on a diet made up of Slim-Jims, Teriyaki
Jerky, Fruit-By-The-Foot, Pemmican Bars, Cliff Bars, a variety of rice
and noodle dinners, a million crackers, squeeze cheese, and other such
delectables, all washed down with Gatorade. My recommendation has and
remains to start introducing such items back into your diet in the last
couple of weeks leading up to your trek - that way, your biological
systems get used to processing things it hasn't seen in awhile, and
you'll do a lot better when its faced with 10 straight days of such.
Those Advisors who are on a rigorous diet plan of whatever sort,
including the Atkins, should certainly discuss this issue with their
physicians during their Philmont Medical Exams.
Always remember, it's hard to hike in a squatting position!
