My wife and I were on the low carb diet when we went to Philmont this past
summer and ate the high carb food Philmont provided. I gained 2 pounds and
she gained 3 while doing trek # 26. After 2 years of being on the low carb
diet, we really enjoyed the meals loaded with carbs! We waited until we got
back home to pick up the low carb diet again.
We did as someone else has already suggested and eased our way into the high
carb food before arriving at Philmont. I found out that Philmont usually
sells left over food from the previous summer. We ordered several of these
meals so we knew exactly what type food we would be eating. Another good
thing about ordering the Philmont food is it will give you and the crew a
wake up call about the weight of the food. While at Philmont, our crew
sorted through our food bags at each pickup and took out the items we knew
we were not going to eat. I believe we had 4 days of food (+ or - a meal)
leaving base camp and saved almost 5 pounds for 2 men by sorting. This
extra weight included unwanted food and unnecessary packaging. 5 pounds may
not be a lot to some of the youngsters but it is a lot for us more mature
scouters!
