RE: [Philmont]: rain suits

I don't recommend ponchos to anyone. They never fit well, they snag and
tear, they don't stop the wind and you end up chilled.
If the weather is warm or hot, I don't wear rain gear at all since you end
up sweating more than its worth. I've tried gortex and several other brands
of breathable garments.
On the other hand, good rain suit will keep you warm in cold rain. The key
is to keep the under garments to a minimum because you'll most likely sweat
even in extremely cold weather.
With that in mind, the rain suit works best around camp when your not doing
any strenuous activity. If you don't want to spend a lot of money and are
not concerned about breathability, Campor does have some inexpensive rain
gear that's not that heavy and is extremely durable. I bought an adult
small for my older son over 6 years ago and my younger son is still using
it. There are no holes or tears and the lamination has held up well.

Subject: [Philmont]: rain suits

I have already been advised not to use a poncho as protection from the rain.
I have been introduced to a suit called the Frogg Togg. The complete suit
,top and bottom, only weighs 11.5 oz. It feels durable, at least considering
it's weight. It has zippered pant legs, allowing you to donn it with boots
on. I have used one while jogging, to see how well it blocks the wind. I
give it high marks for that. Any feed back regarding it's use at Philmont.
I like the weight issue, but I also know that if it would rip, It could make
10 days miserable, especially since we will be going the last part of July.
The likelyhood of it ripping is only increased with heavy brush. Will I
encounter much heavy brush on the trail? Thanks for your input.
