[Philmont]: Rainsuits - my 2 cents

This is one of those discussions that go on..... and on.... and on....
:)

I have a gortex rainsuit that I have used for around 7 years. It has
finally been removed from active service and taken up the job as my winter
gear snow suit. My lovely wife made me a down jacket years ago and that
covered by my gortex jacket is the best winter gear I have ever used. The
gortex pants are tough, warm and do a great job over pants and long
underwear.

This past summer at Philmont I used the new Columbia Omnitech jacket and
pants. Bought a set for my son too. And, they kept us very warm and dry
through 2-3 hour afternoon rains, especially a very heavy storm at Apache
Springs. They are considerably lighter that my gortex and do pack down
nicely. Also a nice morning and evening jacket over some 100 weight
polartec.

Pricing was cheaper than gortex as well. As for long-term durability, I
suspect they will wear considerably better than frog-togs but not as better
over many years as gortex. But, for weight and durability I think they were
a good compromise.
