Does everyone agree duffle bags are best for airline travel? Any thoughts?

and David Lyons responded...

No, there isn't an issue ever brought up on this site that everyone agrees
to the same solution!!!

<snip> However, we have not flown since new regulations so not sure about
duck taping bags. HHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmm - a new wrinkle.

What fun is it if everyone agrees?

I use a duffle bag, and think that is best. Each member of our Council
contingent is issues ONE airline bag, and a small carry-on. Post 9/11, the
bags must be able to be readily opened for inspection, so the prior wrapping
with duct tape (especially on the return trip where the bag already shows
the wear and tear of it's first trip) is a thing of the past). Basically,
tears, etc. need to be repaired with duct tape, and then a small piece used
to simply close the top.

Another issue with airlines is the overall dimension requirement (length
plus width plus depth) of less than 62". Many packs (even without Philmont
issued crew gear and food) exceed that - mine did by a couple inches. The
fee (if you are hit with it) is excessive, and I had an alternate plan in
place to break it down into two checked items if called on it. But there
was no questions at all.

Excessive weight of over 50 pounds should never be an issue!
