Last summer, my son and I crammed out packs into my old Army duffel bags for the airline trip. None of the others on the crew did. My son's pack frame ended up broken -- thankfully, on the way home. All other packs were OK. With the straps all pulled tight and the waist belts reversed and fastened around the pack, all the packs were fine. I think all you get by putting a pack in a duffel is to keep it cleaner. It doesn't hurt anything, but didn't seem to help either. Other gear should absolutely be placed in duffels, not stiffer luggage. You have a lot to cram into a couple of lockers while you are on the trail. The more compressable it all is, te better.
