RE: [Philmont]: Philmont 2005

Like many, I just received notice that our Venture Crew drew a July 25,
2005, departure date. We were last there in August 2002. In doing research
I found that the best year to apply for Philmont is a National Jamboree
year. Parents just can't afford to send a boy to both Jamboree and to
Philmont in the same year. I felt optimistic when I submitted my request.

In checking with the Philmont Registrar at the time of the last National
Jamboree, I was told that the follow-up call into the waiting list goes
deeper in Jamboree years. Units will turn back one slot if they have
multiples. Councils find that they have difficulty filling the dates and
cut back the number of crews. Hopefully, units put more thought into the
number of crews requested this year.

I realize we will be on the trail the same time as Jamboree, but the Council
is telling us plan on $2200 for Jamboree. I know that we can cover the cost
for Philmont well under a thousand from Santa Barbara to New Mexico and
back.

One final thought, I think that the new computer registration system went
well -- not just because we got it, but because the Saturday that the adults
would have spent making endless phone dialings for a reservation was able to
be spent with the boys on a hiking trip. That's what Scouting is all about.

The notifications are being sent.

I just received an e-mail from Philmont stating we have been allocated
two crews for 2005.
