I guess I started this thread two weeks ago, so I better say how we handled
financing back in August 2002. I've enjoyed reading your responses, but I
wish everyone would sign their email giving their home community also. It
helps us to evaluate the transportation cost in proportion to the distance
and availability of transportation hubs.

We took three vehicles for the nine that were going by car. Three boys who
were late additions to our crew flew and were picked up by us at Albuquerque
Airport.

We asked each participant to put up $150 of their own money in a bank
account. Gas for the vehicles was covered by the unit from the profits of
our annual Christmas Tree lot ($150 per participant).

The $300 we had for each participant covered two nights hotel lodging
(double/triple occupancy), one night in a park, reward/activity patches that
we had pre-determined, and the breakfast and dinner meals en route.
Lunches, snacks en route, souvenirs were the responsibility of each
traveler. One of our participant's parents own a shirt and embroidery
business so we got (at cost) three shirts and one sweatshirt for each
participant, plus a couple of extras as gifts for the Ranger, etc.

We left Santa Barbara at 1 pm on Friday and stayed at Moabi Park on the
Colorado River outside Needles the first night. I believe it cost us $12
per car. The next day we drove to Albuquerque where we picked up the air
travelers. We stayed that night in Albuquerque on a plot of land owned by
two of the Assistant Crew Leaders. That night we had a celebratory dinner
at TGI Fridays paid for from the fund. Sunday, we went to Church, had
breakfast, stopped at REI for any last minute items (each participant
responsible for own purchase here) and did some sightseeing in Taos and
Angel Falls. We made an orientation stop at the Ranch before heading on to
Raton for our last night's bed in a hotel and a hot shower. Monday, we
arrived.

On our return trip, we left Saturday AM, dropped off the three boys at the
Airport and stayed in a hotel in Flagstaff. We arrived back in Santa
Barbara at 4:30 pm. We were able to issue small refund checks to each of
the participants. The boys traveling by air were able to get a great
airfare as one of the boys parents is a pilot.

Costs: $435 for Philmont; $150 per participant from the Christmas Tree
money, and $150 cash on deposit. We had a couple of practice hikes where we
went on a pay as you go basis. As you can see we did it for less than $800
per participant.

Our sightseeing en route included the Craters in Arizona, the Vietnam Museum
in Angel Falls, Taos, a drive-through tour of Santa Fe. Coming from the
west, there is not much to be seen.

$700, we drove from California. Looked at trains, increased the cost by
$200 per person. Flying increased the cost by $300 per person.

Drive out was accomplished IAW the BSA rules of no more than 8 hours
driving. We included a small side-trip, up the tram to Sandia Peak.
