[Philmont]: Trekking Poles

My one big concern about my ability to complete a Philmont trek was my
knees. I believe that my trekking poles made the difference, along with
pre-trek conditioning. They helped in every aspect: uphill, downhill,
balance, ... They were particularly useful crossing streams as they helped
provide balance and confidence. I don't think healthy and energetic youth
really need them but I would highly recommend them for any adult who has leg
concerns. Compared to the total cost of a Philmont trek, and with all of
the time and effort invested to ensure that your trek is successful, the
extra cost for poles is well worth it, especially if you plan on doing more
hiking in the future and can get more use out of them.
