[Philmont]: Cheap Gear

Sorry for the peripheral post, but the following was sent out to our
Council listserv and figured cross-posting it here might be appropriate. I
have NO experience with Alps gear, but their pack, tent & sleeping bag
prices certainly seem good! For example, their "big" pack (5000 cu in) is
on sale for only $60. If you buy it in conjunction with their 2 person
backpack tent (weighing 5 lb, 2 oz), they sell you both items for only
$100. Just the tent is on sale for $60 as well. These prices seem pretty
phenomenal. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02 & '04)

Hi Scouters,

Three or four years ago, someone posted a reference to
www.scoutdirect.com on the DENSCOUTS list. I filed it away, and this
summer ordered from them. I had a good experience, so I thought I'd
repost the information. Basically, Alps Mountaineering makes tents,
sleeping bags, packs & pads. They sell to sporting goods stores. They
set up scoutdirect.com to take orders from scouts, scouters, Troops &
Crews. They sell their goods at a 45% discount to scouting related
parties. In addition, they have a sale page which is periodically
updated with even better deals: http://www.scoutdirect.com/sale.htm.
They also will give a 60% discount on the first tent, pack & etc. sold
to a unit (the 1st one only).

We ordered a number of tents, packs & bags last summer and were very
pleased with what we've gotten & at great prices (a number were off the
sale page), so I've attached their latest newsletter.

What you do is look at the Scoutdirect site for pricing (the pricelist
is here: <http://www.scoutdirect.com/04PriceList.pdf>), & then look at
the Alps Mountaineering site for item descriptions
(<http://www.alpsmountaineering.com>).

Also, the news letter mentions attached Excel files. Since we can't
have any attachments on the listserv, I've saved them to my site here:
<http://home.att.net/~g.e.newman/scoutdirect.xls> (both sheets are in
one file).

Subject: ALPS Mountaineering Holiday SALE Update

Hello Scouts,

Hope everyone is getting ready for a few days off, eating too much turkey,
and then "officially" getting ready for Holiday shopping! As I mentioned
in my last update on Nov. 9th, we traditionally offer a few items this time
of year for a "Holiday Sale". I think what we've selected this year, and
the prices we're offering, will make you consider giving that special
"camper" some new gear!
a.. Holiday Sale - I've attached an Excel order form with the details of
the Cascade internal frame pack and the Mystique tent. The Cascade
information can be viewed at http://www.alpsmountaineering.com/Cascade.htm
and the Mystique information is at
http://www.alpsmountaineering.com/Mystique.htm. As you can see, these
prices are both pretty incredible. Brian had written on a scrap sheet of
paper this morning, the Cascade at $60 is "crazy"!! There are a lot of
specialty backpacking shops that sell day packs for more than $60. We also
decided to simplify things by making both the Mystique 1.5 and 2 the same
$60 price. Then if you need both a pack and a tent, the "combo" price goes
down even further, to $100. We know there will be a lot of "one day" sales
on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, but we're going to keep these prices
in effect until Dec. 15th.
b.. Fall Sale - We've had such a good response to the original "Halloween
Sale" (Pads and Crescent Lake sleeping bags) that we've renamed it the
"Fall Sale" and it too will run until Dec. 15th.
While we'd appreciate getting your order placed with us within the next
week or two to make sure you get it in time for Christmas, you don't need
to think we have "limited quantities" at these hot prices and that you need
to "rush" and get your order in by this weekend.

Like before, you can call in your order to us at 800-344-2577. If it's
after hours, you can leave a message, either with your complete ordering
information or with some other message. You can email the order form back
to Debbie at debbie@alpsmountaineering.com or you can fax it to us at
573-459-2044. If you decide to email or fax in your order, please note on
the order form that we now need your 3 digit security code that's on the
back of your credit card. Lastly, LaRayne, Brian, and I will be gone at a
trade show next week, which means Debbie will be here by herself answering
the phones, so if you don't get through right away, we'd ask for your
patience and understanding.

As always, we really appreciate your support and business. Hope you all
have a safe and relaxing Holiday Season with your friends and family.
