I also used an Alps Mystique 2 for Philmont this last year through
scoutdirect.com. I was very impressed. Only downside of the tent is that
it has to be staked and will not stand on its own. But I had no problems at
Philmont with the ground and stakes at all. Plus, for less than 100 buck,
the only other tent you can get to touch that is the Coleman tent of the
same design. Mine retained a little more condensation, but the Coleman was
not nearly as ruggedly sturdy. The weight was slightly heavier in the Alps,
but it was also roomier.
I suspect, for Philmont, you can get away with the 1.5 Mystique, and be even
happier since it is lighter.

Add to the comments below the attractive "try it" pricing for single items
and its hard to go wrong. Our Troop has used Eureka TL2s & TL4s for years
but we purchased an ALPS unit for an eval and like the others have no
complaints. Add to that that this company is *VERY* Scout Friendly makes it
worth a serious look. While we stuck with our Eurekas at Philmont last year
(three guys per TL4) I saw plenty of crews with ALPS gear and heard zero
complaints.

I used an Alps Mystique 2 at Philmont in 2003 and at the Double H in 2004,
as well as in the training hikes leading up to the treks. I really like the
tent. One of our other advisors had the whole deal -- tent, backpack and
sleeping bag -- and he was very happy with them, as well.
As with everything Philmont, there is no "one size fits all", but I think
Alps makes pretty good stuff; maybe not state of the art, but a very good
value for the price, and able to stand up to a Boy Scout high adventure
trip.

I haven't looked at the specific tents on sale but the Northern Tier folks
use Alps Mountaineering tents for their 2 person tents (Taurus 2 AL I
think). We used them in 2003. I thought that they were excellent tents.

Out Troop has used a variety of Alps tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags.
Make no mistake, these are not high end products. They compare to Wenzel,
Coleman, etc. For the price, we have found them to be an excellent buy. The
quality is better than the other products at that price point. Overall we
have been very pleased with the products, YiS, Jim Welton McAllen, Texas
