Due to extensive lobbying by beach resort owners, who were losing their
summer help in early August, the General Assembly in NC passed a law
mandating that school start no earlier than August 25 and finish no later
than June 10, effective in August 2005.

This changes us from the 'start 8/1, finish before Memorial Day' calendar we
were on, and also largely eliminates the week the kids had as a fall break
in October. Most importantly, in our area, that changes first semester
finals from before Christmas to just after New Year's, and cuts back on the
winter holidays.

In our case, it's forcing us to cancel a Florida Sea Base trip because the
kids start back to school on 1/2/2006, instead of 15 or 1/9. If we take the
trip, they'll miss exams! Unfortunately, Sea Base won't give us a refund.

Good point, about when schools get out for the summer. I would not have even
thought about this. I know here in our area in Georgia, our schools are
getting out for the summer in late May.
