summer help in early August, the General Assembly in NC passed a law
mandating that school start no earlier than August 25 and finish no later
than June 10, effective in August 2005.
Here in Virginia, we have a similar law for the same reason. In fact, with
only a couple exceptions, public schools don't start classes until the day
after Labor Day. That means that they don't finish until well into June
(Fairfax County's last day of classes this school year is June 24!). That
makes it a little more difficult in terms of getting a slot at Philmont, as
they usually start operation on June 9 or 10. Texas is good example of the
opposite - you'll see tons of Texas crews during the first few weaks of the
Philmont season, but when the end of July comes around, they are all getting
ready to go back to school.
As many of you know, there is a push toward year-round schooling in many
areas. I've always wondered how such a change would affect not only
Philmont, but other summer programs as well...
