Though it's certainly not an exact science, nor timely if you need it
"now", I have acquired over two dozen complete and partial cook kits at
yard sales, average price about $5.00 Many were donated outright when
the homeowner understood I was a Scoutmaster. If you have a large
Troop, asking everyone to be on the lookout for such items is a
relatively painless mechanism for acquiring all sorts of gear on the
cheap. Even if you have a small Troop, all you need is one person who
enjoys hitting yardsales and you're set.
Another thing I have done in my capacity of RT Commissioner or Asst. RT
Commissioner (I really do wear way too many hats) is hold a "gear
exchange night", where everyone brings in their various parts and/or
cast-offs and "no-longer-wanteds". Do you know a single Scoutmaster or
Quartermaster who isn't looking to clear his Scout closet of "all the
junk"? No items for sale, FCFS in sequence once the sale opens (helps
to have an unsympathetic guy like me as a monitor to make sure people
stay in Scout-mode). An excellent source of cookware sets and parts,
along with a host of other items, many of which cannot be acquired in
any other way anymore. If your District has never held something like
this, perhaps a chat with your RTC's could make it happen. You need a
good communication net across your Units to make it worthwhile, or
someone will have to get on the phone and make those 35 (or whatever)
phonecalls.
Finally, if you have a good District e-net, you could also just make a
solicitation and see what comes in. I have given away tons of stuff,
most recently 17 refurbished backpacks to a financially disadvantaged
nearby Troop who was/is trying to get back into backpacking.
