I do think by adding MY, we clarify what is believed to be the
official stance - belief in a higher power as that is the litmus test
per BSA.
I don't know if adding "My" to the Scout Oath would be proper. As it stands
now, the wording implies God in the most generic terms. By adding "My" I
think it would have the possibility of being more divisive. Scout A says "My
God is better than your God." :>)
In reality, I believe that what is really needed is for the BSA to become
better at handling the attacks on Scouting. We have too often taken the
Ostrich in the sand approach to negative PR. Greg Shields, who is/was the official
national spokesman, was always way to passive in his dealings with the
press.
When the BSA gets slammed by the ACLU and all of the other anti-BSA folks we
need someone who can carry the battle to them. I hate when we fail to
respond in a strong way. By doing so, we seem to giving in to them and letting
them come of as the people with the correct point of view.
We seem to have forgotten part of the explanation of the Scout Law related
to obedient; "if he thinks those laws are wrong he works to change them." If
we think that those who oppose the BSA are wrong, we need to work to change
the perception the general public receives. Let's face it, in today's society
what the public sees in 30 and 60 second sound bites are what they remember.
Just as the attacks of 9/11 woke our country up to the fact that there were
those who were at war with the United States, it is time for the BSA to
realize that there are those who are at war with us and they will not rest until
our grand organization has been relegated to the scrap heap of history.
Just my personal opinions, your opinions and mileage will vary.
