RE: [Philmont]: Polar Pure

wrt Polar Pure - we used it during our shakedowns and on the trail because
Philmont supplied it and we wanted to practice what we expected to do. On
the trail we were issued half a dozen or so jars. We also had a filter and
micro-pur as well. In general we developed a cadence with the Polar Pure
that ensured adequate water supply and charged polar pures without problems
or complaint. We also used the micro-pur from time to time as well with
similar results although it is simpler to use. Whatever Philmont goes with
will be just fine, introducing your guys to various techniques is an
opportunity as well.

wrt Filters - a word of caution. Be sure that the members of your crew that
might end up using the filter are well versed in its operation. We had a
new cartridge clogged in a matter of minutes by a scout who didn't
understand that for cloudy water the regime was to let it settle out prior
to pumping ... It was the first time (and last) that we used the filter on a
day when the rain just wouldn't stop and the only source of water was a
creek. That was it for the filter for us, fortunately it was day 9.

I believe the waiting period for the chlorine-based tablet was about as
long as the Polar Pure. It takes time to kill the bugs. A trip to REI
will give you more information that you'll ever want to know as they have
most of the different ways to purify sitting on their shelves. You can read
the directions on them all for free. Once Philmont decides what they want
to provide, then you can decide what you will use for your purification
needs.

We spent a ton of time discussing the filter vs. chemical purifiers last
year before we went, only to discover, while on the trail, that it was less
effort to chemically treat, and so everyone favored that. However, we had
filters and used them for "on the trail" purification when the need arose.

I had heard that they were going to go with bleach of some sort
(staff camps and rangers have been using it for years - I was introduced to
it in 2001 by a ranger) it's something like 12 or 16 drops per gallon of
water and stir for 60 seconds. Can anyone confirm this or help out with the
correct drops per liter or gallon???

I believe I heard there is a replacement treatment they will
provide. Correct guys?

I've heard Polar Pure is not an option this summer. Does that mean
we have to bring our own, or are they gonna even allow it brought in?
