I second the advice of knowing and practicing a variety of cooking methods. We used turkey bags on a couple of shakedown hikes. The boys liked that method, as the clean up seemed to be easier. I made them use the more traditional method of 2 pot cooking/ clean up with a frizbee sump also, so they could make an informed decision of cooking style. The boys opted for the turkey bags. we arrived at Philmont, had our final shakedown, only to realize I had left the turkey bags we purchased back home. Just shy of a panic, we went to the trading post, and of course found no bags. We were going to send a couple guys into town to buy some, but missed the bus. We finally resigned to the fact we were doomed to the traditional method. Fortunately, as I mentioned, the boys were familiar with it. Believe it or not, nobody keeled over the entire 10 days! There were some meals we were able to hydrate in the bag they were packaged in. The key there is to be careful when opening the bag, leaving as much of the pouch in tact for the addition of water. Use a bowl as support of the pouch, as once the water is added, it will be hot and the bag will want to topple over. Seal it up as tight as possible and wait about 12- 15 minutes. Longer is better, especially if pasta is involved. Be Prepared! I love it!
