Robert,
I would highly recommend the train to Raton. We took it from Ft. Madison,
IA on our 2003 trip and was one of the best decisions we made.
There is a dining car and the prices are what you would expect for a captive
audience. You might want to take a snack instead.
Sleeping arrangements means a tilt-back seat, but they were certainly
sleepable.
The BEST part was getting off the trail, checking out and NOT having to
drive for a couple of days to get home!!
Philmont was right on time picking us up. We ate at a fast food stop before
going to the ranch.
Downside is the ability of the train to be on-time. Going out was fine,
coming home the train was 8 hours late, train and track problems. But
again, there was NO windshield time and the adult leaders liked that very
much.
Here is a link to our "Day 0" that has a half-dozen photos of our trip out.
The last day has some on our trip home. In between is our trip, Trek 1.
Have a great Trek!!
