My 2cents on trains to Philmont. We took a train from Indidanapolis to Raton, N.M. last summer. The first leg to Chicago (as well as the return trip from Chicago to Indy) was long and boring for the boys. (5.5 hours by train, versus 3 by bus) The leg from Chicago to Raton, however, was an enjoyable trip. With about a 4.5 hour lay over, the boys were able to see a little bit of Chicago. The next 20 hours were occupied with card playing, book reading, snacking and sight seeing from the observation car. The adults thoroughly enjoyed the idea of not having to drive. Saved travel time too! A few ground rules for the boys, and we were off. We'd definitely do it again. We ended up with a cost of about 151.00 per person. You are allowed to take small coolers on board the train. Some of our scouts and scouters brought there meals in collapsible or disposable coolers for the trip out. I highly recommend looking at the train option, as it is nice to kick back and reflect on the past 14 days, without the worry or fatigue of driving the long distances. Compared to flying, boarding was hassle free.
