[Philmont]: Interested in Amtrak

I've been reading the Amtrak thread and I am very interested the train option. I have a few questions (to start) :

1. What is a good Checked Baggage and Carry-on Strategy?
   -I understand we can take 2 carry-ons and 3 checked.
   -and its very cheap ($10) to check each extra piece.
2. Do backpacks need extra protective covering if checked?
3. What kind of scrutiny should I expect for stoves and fuel bottles?
4. Is it best to arrive a day early and try to get into base camp to mitigate any delays en route?
