The folks at Amtrak know how to handle scouts. We loaded at Union
Station in Chicago. They herded us into a separate section of the
waiting room and loaded us first once the train was ready (1 hour late).
We placed our packs in the baggage car as a group and carried on
daypacks. I also had a duffle bag with crew gear, no extra charge. I put
my pack cover on to cover my water bottles in the side mesh pockets. Our
gear was in a baggage section in a coach car so it was accessible during
the trip if need be, but I encourage you have what you need in the
daypack in case that's not the case when you go.

Send your stoves and fuel bottles in advance and ship them back
afterwards. We were not checked before we left but it's not worth the
risk.
