If you could get eye shades too it would help! I agree the doors opening and
closing (entrance to cars) are noisy noisy and really make it hard to sleep
if close and late at night. After 12 m until 6 am it does settle down pretty
much but still had to sleep just due to train noise. YiS; Jerry D Bailey
(done it twice and hope to do it again!)

I AGREE with the positive comments about taking the train. It gives the
boys an experience they might not get any other way.

We took the train in 1999 AND 2003.............the adults didn't want the
responsibility of driving after10 days on the trail..........THE RISK ZONE.

Food is expensive, but not out of reach for any scout if they plan ahead and

choose wisely. AMTRAK has the meals and prices on their website.

We considered callling a pizza place to have it delivered to the Station in
Albuqueque, but the times didn't work out for us...........BUT is another
option.

Also, Take snacks and a couple drinks. Educate the boys about the
meals/prices and tell them not to blow all their money in the CLUB Car,
which is really more expensive than the dining car.

Other suggestions-- take EAR PLUGS and a good jacket or small blanket (it
gets cold at night), take playing cards, have advisors pack the few knives
you take in an adult's pack, tell the boys the sleeper cars are off limits,
give them an IN THE SEAT curfew at night, get seats in the middle of the car

---------people go in and out the car all night and the doors are noisy.

>From LA to Albuqueque there is a native America guide who presents a
historical/geological, interpretive talk in the Club Car. There are also
MOVIES.

The train is a great way to allow the boys some freedom, but with limits.
