RE: [Philmont]: Bear Bags

Easterners. Sigh. :-)

The preferred method in the Sierras (if canisters are not required) is the
balance method. Throw a rope over a branch. Tie one bear bag to the rope.
Pull it really high. Tie another bear bag to the other end of the rope,
throw it high, the other bag comes down, and get both side by side out of
reach (rope appropriate length :-). No tie off to a tree, which the bears
around here are smart enough to know how to untie (or cut) to get the bag
down. Philmont teaches the tie off method which will not deter a Sierran
bear. I guess the Philmont bears aren't as smart :-)

Of course, Philmont should get with the times and switch to canisters which
are far more environmentally friendly (and bear proof) than Philmont's
cables that mar the trees to which they are attached, or throwing over a
branch which mars the branch the rope is pulled over :-)
