I'm not sure what the drive is to West Virginia, but I would think not
much more than the 6-hour drive from Dayton. We have taken the entire
troop white water rafting on the New River almost every year since
1993. There is an upper section of the New with Class I - III rapids
which the newest scouts can readily do in one-man or two-man rubber
duckies (like inflatable kayaks). The older scouts (14 and over) can
do the lower New with Class III - V rapids in rafts. For older scouts
the Upper Gaulley (16 and over) and Lower Gaulley ( 15 and over) during
the weekends in September and October when they open the dam at
Sommersville Lake is probably the best white water rafting in the
eastern US. There are a number of companies. We have always gone with
Class VI Outfitters which is the premier group and is owned by 3 Eagle
scouts. They have really been very accommodating for us, and the boys
have thoroughly enjoyed it. We have also backpacked a number of
sections of the Appalachian Trail. I don't know what you have for
caving, but our boys have really enjoyed this also. We traditionally
go with some guides in caves near Carter Caves in eastern Kentucky.
There are a number of caves on private property. The guides we have
used know these caves very well and have supplied all of the lights and
helmets as well as knee pads. I can supply more information if there
is interest.
