When I was an Explorer Scout, our post specialized in hiking/backpacking,
and took on the challenge of hiking every historical trail within a 500 mile
radius of our meeting place. Historical trails are trails where the path
covers ground of some historical significance, and which, upon completion of
hiking and an examination covering questions on the history of the trail,
provide for award of a patch and medal. I recall the Kentucky Lincoln
Trail, the Ohio River Trail, and numerous others. If you use Google with
["historical trail" Scout <geographic area>] as your search term you will
find information on what's available in your area.
But that worked for our group, as we were especially interested in medium to
high adventure backpacking.
I would suggest the merit badge program probably offers a lot for the medium
aged Scout to work on. Which part of the merit badge program? Depends on
the interests of the boys, but there's a lot to choose from. Key to keeping
the medium aged boys interested in Scouting is to find out what they're
interested in, and showing them that Scouting offers a good umbrella to
explore those interests.
