Subject: [Philmont]: Coffe, tea or ......
One thing to remind the first timers is that the Philmont trail meals do
not include coffee, tea, Mountain Dew or any other adult morning
beverage. You must bring your own. There are some who subscribe to the
idea that one should quit caffeine cold turkey, or do without the
creature comfort of a good hot cup-a-joe. To those ideas I say "
Hogwash!" Some of my best memories and most compelling moments have
occurred with just me, my coffee and the beauty of God's country. I have
had coffee with the glory of a mountain sunrise, the songs of the birds
and even a 14 point buck. I always get up before the crew and brew my
cup and have a private moment, before the crowd stirs. Never has the
crew been able to get up and pack and be ready for the trail before I
could do the same and have my morning coffee...
To that end I am inquiring if anyone has a special blend for the trail.
Over the past years I have always carried the coffee in a bag, along
with equal tablets and small individual packets of creamer. While there
is the issue of extra trash from the packaging and the wet coffee bag,
it has not been a huge issue. One of my cohorts carries a premixed
formula of instant coffee, sugar and creamer, and spoons it out one at a
time. No mess and no fuss.
My problem is that I am not real fond of the instant coffees that I have
tried. They don't taste anywhere as near good as the bags or home brew.
Any suggestions?
For what its worth, there is always plenty of hot chocolate, the staffed
camps always have an advisor coffee hour after dinner and of course it
does exist at base camp.
