RE: [Philmont]: Arrival date- departure date can't leave it alone

Day 1
> Meals in Philmont dining hall.
First meal is lunch. Because of the train schedules from the west, we have
been getting in the day before day 1 (shall we call that day 0?), spend the
night in tent city ($8/person in 2005) and pay for an extra breakfast
($4/person in 2005, something which Philmont handles quite poorly, but at
least they handle it). If you get in after lunch, you will simply get one
less meal than you are paying for (no big deal) but you may not be able to
complete your check in that day, which could delay your departure for the
trail the next day. This is also no big deal, because the first day's hike
on nearly all the treks is so short as to be virtually negligible (our
Itinerary 2 to Anasazi was about a 30 minute walk, though it was a bit of a
drive to six mile gate). What your crew would miss, on a late arrival on
your arrival day, is a chance to relax and see some of the stuff there, such
as Villa Philmonte or the Seton Museum. We checked in immediately after
breakfast and did not finish in time to take the bus to Cimarron, so I don't
think that is a realistic expectation anyway.
Day 12
> Return from backcountry to Camping HQ (via bus or hike in via the Tooth of
Time).

We had a full 12 day trek this summer (808-K). Our arrival daw was Aug 8.
We departed on the train Aug. 20, with our closing campfire August 19.
Let's see, that appears to come to ...depart Day 13. Yep, we're there.

That trail down from the tooth is long, those switchbacks go forwever. I
would be tempted to take one of the trails down the west side next time and
walk around. Anybody done that? On the map, it doesn't look too bad.

 Day 13
> Continental breakfast in Philmont dining hall
Lunch on day 13 is not included, but you can buy a lunch. If you are
traveling east bound on the train, the scheduled time is something like 5:30
pm, so you will want to have lunch *somewhere*, and where better than to
spend the extra time but at Philmont? That would be a good time for museum
tours, etc.
