Depends which direction you are coming from. The train has been running
relatively close to on time the last couple of years. If coming from the
east, the train is scheduled to arrive around 10:30 in the morning. You
should have little trouble getting fully checked in if you arrive on your
arrival day.
If coming from the west (where we come from), train is scheduled to arrive
at 5:30pm, after checkin is closed up. You can't arrive on your check in
day, you must arrive a day early. You won't even *GET* to Philmont until at
least 6:30 pm. We got there at 8:30 pm. I honestly don't know what
Philmont would do if you got there on your day one on the evening train.

Our trek started on a Monday in 2005. We have a 22 hour train ride, and
here is how it worked for us.
Saturday (day -1), Aug 6: 7:00 pm scheduled departure for Amtrak from
Fullerton, CA.
Sunday (day 0), Aug 7: 6:30 pm arrived Raton 1 hour late, Picked up by
Philbus, stopped at A&W for dinner
8:30 pm arrived Philmont, checked into tent city for our extra night
(arranged before hand)
Monday (day 1), Aug 8: Day one of our trek. After breakfast, checked in.
Took until 2:30 pm.
Toured Villa Philmonte, then free time, religious service, opening
campfire.
Friday, Aug 19: Day 12 of our trek, arrived CHQ around 10:30 after hiking
down from TOT trail camp.
Goofed off, then religious service, closing campfire.
Saturday, Aug 20: Day 13, Board bus to Raton at 9:00 am, train scheduled to
depart Raton 10:30 am.
Sunday, Aug 21: Day 14, scheduled to arrive in Fullerton at 7:00 am, arrived
8:00 am.
Days missed from work: 10. But we had two nearly full days on either end of
the trek to prepare/relax.
For us, it doesn't appear to matter what day we start. Had our trek started
on Friday, we could have caught a train after work on Wed., arriving Thur
night, hit trail Saturday. At the back end, into CHQ on a Tuesday, train
Wed. morning, arrive home Thur morning and go to work. No days to prepare
or relax, but days off work is still 10.
Let's see, a Saturday trek. Train Thur. night, trail Sunday, off trail
Wednesday, train home Thursday, arrive Fri. morning. That comes to 10 days
off.
Sunday trek? Train Fri. night, trail SUnday, off trail Thu, train home Fri.
arrive Sat. morning, days off 10.
I suspect the dynamic is a bit different when coming from the east, as you
don't necessarily have the departure/arrival outside the business day.
Take what you can get and relax. Your blood pressure will check better and
you'll still have a good time.
If an adult has a *serious* need for one more day of work, have them fly to
Albuquerque or La Junta and join you on the train.
